OFITECO has been selected by the General Directorate of Highways attached to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport for carrying out control and surveillance works for the “El Musel port access motorway. Section: Lloreda (Gijón) – Veriña link” in Asturias, Spain.
These works consist of the duplication of the current AS-19 road, during the section between Lloreda link and Veriña link, in order to provide it with motorway features. The length of the section is 3,46 km. The width of every road will host two carriageways with two 3.5 m lanes, an outer shoulder of 2.5 m and inner shoulders of 1 m separated by a 1 m central reservation.
The project includes two links named Lloreda y Peñona and a final connection with a link in Veriña roundabout. A total of 25 structures were designed in order to overcome orographic accidents and to cross other existing or planned infrastructures, being 11 viaducts, 11 overpasses and 3 underpasses.
It is worth mentioning the two unique structures of the project. On one side there is a stayed arch with 54 m span between supports where suspension ropes hold up the 23 m composite deck from a metal section upper arch. On the other side there is a composite bridge, double metal casing in a roadway, with 110 m span between supports.
The main aim of this project is reducing the heavy traffic crossing the urban area and improving the competitiveness of “El Musel” since connections are promoted because of the main traffic thoroughfares around Asturias and with different industrial sites in the area surrounding Gijón.
